Giorgia Meloni swept into office promising a populist revolution.
She was going to secure the borders, crush the globalist bureaucracy and put Italy first. Sound familiar? It should. She explicitly modelled her brand on the MAGA movement, presenting herself as Europe’s ultimate conservative fighter.
Instead, Italy got a masterclass in pivot politics.
Nearly four years into her term, reality bites. Meloni did not drain the swamp. She became its chief administrator. Now, with her domestic agenda in ruins, she is resorting to the oldest trick in the establishment playbook: Coming up with a fake diplomatic feud with Donald Trump to distract from her failures at home.
Let us look at the cold, hard numbers mainstream media love to ignore.
Meloni promised an economic renaissance. What she delivered is absolute stagnation. While the U.S. economy powers ahead, Italy is completely stuck in neutral, limping along at a pathetic 0.6% GDP growth.
Even worse, her promise of fiscal discipline has turned into a ticking debt bomb. Italy’s national debt is currently spiraling towards a jaw-dropping 138.6% of GDP-on a direct track to overtake Greece as the most indebted economy in the eurozone.
The forgotten men and women of Italy are the ones paying the price. The national tax burden has climbed above 43%, whilst inflation continues to destroy middle-class purchasing power. Wages are flatlined. Unsurprisingly, international investors are fleeing the country, with foreign direct investment nearly halving in a single year.
But her biggest betrayal? The border.
Meloni literally built her entire career on a promise to stop illegal migration. It was her signature issue.
Yet under her watch, maritime arrivals skyrocketed, leaving Italy as the most porous entry point into Europe. Her highly publicized “Albania plan” to process migrants offshore devolved into a total laughing stock, resulting in empty facilities, legal defeats and millions in wasted taxpayer cash.
Meanwhile, behind closed doors, her administration quietly approved record-high quotas for legal migration.
The results of this decline are catastrophic.
In 2024 alone, nearly 200,000 Italian citizens packed their bags and abandoned their homeland — the vast majority of them young, highly skilled, ambitious. At the same time, Italy’s native birth rate has collapsed to its lowest level in recorded history. As it turns out, empty slogans about family and tradition do not pay the bills or encourage people to have children.
So, what do you do when your economy is teetering, your border is wide open, and your population is shrinking?
You pick a fight with the president of the United States.
So, the sudden, toxic friction between Rome and Washington is entirely manufactured. For years, Meloni pretended to be Trump’s trusted ally on the global stage. But when the going got tough during the recent conflict in Iran, she showed her true colors.
When the U.S. military needed logistical solidarity, Meloni explicitly refused to let American aircraft use Italian airbases. She looked the other way when her most important ally needed her most.
Now, she is using petty quarrels over a G7 photo and cancelling diplomatic visits to Washington in order to look like some sort of a fighter standing up to Uncle Sam.
It is a desperate trick, and it is completely transparent. Meloni is acting tough on the international stage because she cannot deliver a single victory at home.
Across the West, the lesson is clear: Conservative rhetoric means absolutely nothing without execution. Meloni had her shot, she surrendered to the establishment, and now she is dragging Italy’s most vital alliance through the mud just to make headlines.
