Claude’s ‘Private’ Share Links Pop Up In Google Search

Content shared by Anthropic’s Claude users subtly made its way onto the world’s most popular search engine.

Files users created with the Claude chatbot appeared in Google Search results, Axios reported Monday. These files, what Claude calls “artifacts,” include “documents, code snippets, single-page HTML websites, SVG images, diagrams and flowcharts [and] Interactive React components,” according to the Claude support website.

Axios was able to access public artifacts such as business records, company plans, spreadsheets and medical documents on Monday — but not chatbot conversations.

“We give people control over sharing their Claude conversations publicly, and in keeping with our privacy principles, we do not share chat directories or sitemaps with search engines like Google,” an Anthropic spokesperson told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“These shareable links are not guessable or discoverable unless people choose to share them themselves,” the spokesperson added. “When someone shares a conversation, they are making that content publicly accessible, and like other public web content, it may be archived by third-party services.”

Conversations shared from OpenAI’s ChatGPT were indexed on Google in July 2025, according to Fast Company. OpenAI removed the public chats from Google Search after about 24 hours.

“Neither Google nor any other search engine controls what pages are made public on the web, and these pages were indexed across many search engines,” a Google spokesperson told the DCNF. “We give site owners clear controls to decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed, and we always respect those directives.”

Google site owners can use the Removals tool to hide URLs from showing up in search results.

“[E]very app, doc, dashboard and tool people published from Claude is also sitting indexed and searchable,” Om Patel, founder of AI research platform BigIdeasDB, said in a post on X featuring a screenshot that showed the Claude posts available with Google Search.

“People have already pulled up internal company dashboards, full project plans with client details, and someone’s entire clinical trial summary with real medical data in it,” Patel added. “[N]obody reading that thinks it means ‘and Google will list it publicly.’ … [T]hird party sites have started scraping and organizing these into browsable collections, so deleting it from search doesn’t mean it’s gone.”

When sharing a Claude chat, the user is given two options: “keep private” and “create public link,” according to the AI tool’s website. The latter option states that “anyone with the link can view.”

Claude also includes a warning statement, “Don’t share personal information or third-party content without permission” as well as a link to the company’s Usage Policy. Users can create public share links, but conversations are not shared automatically.
