Plateau: 7 miners killed in pit collapse

Tragedy struck Kassa community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State when seven miners were killed after a mining pit collapsed.

Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Wednesday while the victims were digging the pit to extract minerals from the site.

The Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident to our correspondent by telephone on Thursday.

According to him, the victims were inside the mining site when a heap of sand collapsed on them, adding that all seven died on the spot.

Tengwong said all efforts were made to rescue them, but by the time they were reached, they had been found lifeless.

He said, “We gathered that they were among several miners at the site, but the victims were actually inside the mining pit when it caved in. Rescuers were immediately mobilised, but because the heap of sand was enormous, they were found dead when the diggers eventually reached them.”
