AI Under Development to Support Students

The Ministry of Education is developing an artificial intelligence-powered digital assistant to help students bridge learning gaps, officials said Monday.

The tool, set for pilot implementation in the 2025-2026 school year, aims to personalize education and improve student results.

The AI assistant will analyze student responses to exercises, identifying areas of misunderstanding and suggesting targeted study materials.

The system, designed for middle and senior high school students, may also extend to lower elementary grades.

“No student completes their education without struggling at some point in the curriculum,” a senior ministry official told Kathimerini.

Overcoming these challenges, the official said, starts with pinpointing the exact moment where comprehension broke down.

The AI assistant will play a crucial role in identifying this “ground zero” of learning gaps, the official said.

Teachers, with the appropriate approval, will be able to access the data provided by the digital assistant, which will be useful for their work.

The technology relies on machine-learning algorithms to assess knowledge levels, strengths and weaknesses, tailoring study plans accordingly.

The assistant will integrate with Greece’s existing Digital Tutoring platform, leveraging over 15,000 interactive exercises and 7,500 educational videos. The initiative aligns with the ministry’s broader efforts to modernize education through digital tools.

Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis emphasized that the goal is not to replace traditional teaching but to enhance classroom cohesion by providing personalized support.

“The teacher-student relationship remains at the heart of education,” he said.

The project falls under the “Enhancing the Digital School” initiative, with funding expected from the EU Recovery and Resilience Facility.

A final decision on approval is anticipated in March, paving the way for competitive bidding processes.
