Albanian Archbishop in Critical Condition After Emergency Surgery

His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Albania remains in critical condition in the hospital, two weeks after being admitted to a hospital in Tirana with the flu.

He was later airlifted to the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where he has undergone surgery. As Romfea reports, the hospital issued a bulletin on Friday, January 10, stating:

His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios of Albania underwent emergency surgery to address a hemorrhagic episode and has been reintubated and transferred back to the ICU. The next 48 hours are considered critical.

The Archbishop had been experiencing gastrointestinal bleeding, which doctors had been trying to address since his initial admission to Evangelismos. The 95-year-old hierarch’s condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his intubation and transfer to the ICU.
