Andrew B. Raupp has spent over two decades shaping the future of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
His work focuses on not only teaching technical skills but also ensuring that students learn how to apply these skills to solve real-world problems and foster community growth.
Born and raised in Detroit, a city that has faced economic challenges and a significant loss of manufacturing jobs, Raupp’s upbringing instilled in him a sense of resilience, creativity, and resourcefulness. Raised in a family that encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, Raupp’s early years in Detroit played a crucial role in moulding his outlook on education and society.
As a student at Divine Child High School from 1994 to 1998, Raupp excelled academically and developed a passion for learning that would later drive his professional career.
Raupp began his college studies at Wayne State University, where he initially focused on Microbiology from 1998 to 2000 before transferring to Henry Ford College. There, he earned two associate degrees by 2002, a testament to his commitment and drive. Raupp continued his educational journey at the University of Michigan–Dearborn, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 2006. During this time, his growing interest in education and STEM disciplines began to take shape.
Raupp continued his professional growth by participating in leadership programmes such as the Emerging Leaders Programme at Harvard Kennedy School in 2013 and the Education Policy Fellowship Programme at Michigan State University in 2017-2018. These experiences provided him with a deeper understanding of the complexities of education policy and reinforced his mission to improve STEM education for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances.
In 2001, Raupp founded STEM.org Educational Research, a pioneering organisation dedicated to advancing STEM education. Through innovative research, curriculum development, and teacher support, STEM.org has become a leader in the field, offering certifications and educational tools that empower both students and educators. What sets STEM.org apart is Raupp’s ethical approach to education. He has made a point of refusing funding from political groups, lobbyists, and corporations, ensuring that the organisation’s work remains independent and focused solely on the needs of educators and learners.
A key element of Raupp’s work is his introduction of the concept of “Eudaimonic STEM,” which integrates ethics and the humanities into traditionally technical STEM disciplines. This approach encourages students not only to develop their scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical skills but also to consider the societal implications of their work. Raupp believes that STEM education should inspire students to think critically about how their knowledge can be applied to solve the pressing issues facing communities today. This philosophy promotes creativity, ethical decision-making, and a broad, interdisciplinary approach to problem-solving.
Raupp’s vision for STEM education has helped define it as a field that extends beyond technical expertise. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that STEM is seen not just as a tool for personal advancement, but as a means of contributing to social progress, community development, and the well-being of society at large.
