Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sounded a warning about the country’s trajectory, insisting that Nigeria must be re-engineered to ensure its citizens reap the true benefits of democracy.
Speaking on Tuesday at a coalition meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, Atiku lamented that the nation was veering off course, urging urgent corrective action.
“We need a new movement that we can use to correct things,” Atiku declared, addressing a diverse gathering of political figures. “If we do not act this time, our children will become slaves in their fatherland.”

Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, arrived at Yola International Airport at 12:48 p.m. in his private jet, where he was welcomed by Senator Ishaku Abbo. From there, his convoy proceeded to the American University of Nigeria Hotel, the venue of the high-stakes coalition meeting.
While refraining from making definitive political statements, Atiku hinted at an imminent declaration regarding his political future. “It is not yet time for me to speak on the politics of the country, but very soon, I will break my silence on my political position and other things that are wrongly going on in the country,” he said.
The coalition meeting, attended by members of various political parties from all 21 Local Government Areas of Adamawa State, revealed the growing sentiment for change. Senator Abbo, a key organizer, expressed unwavering loyalty to Atiku, signaling a potential political shift. “As the former Vice President, you are our party, you are our logo,” Abbo declared. “Anywhere you go, we will follow you.”
