Ayade Commends Tinubu’s Leadership, Vows Continued Support for APC in Cross River

Former Governor of Cross River State, Professor Ben Ayade, has reaffirmed his strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing confidence in his ability to steer Nigeria toward development just as he did with Lagos State.

Ayade, who many believe is preparing to contest the Cross River North Senatorial seat again in 2027, made the remarks shortly after arriving at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, on Friday, to a rousing welcome from supporters.

Addressing journalists and supporters at his residence, Ayade explained the reason behind his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2021, describing it as a strategic decision rooted in foresight.

“The real truth is that I saw it coming,” Ayade said. “As the nation was descending into political confusion, it became clear to me that the right thing to do was to move to the ruling party. That’s why I came up with the principle of socketing to the centre.”

He added that his early declaration of support for Tinubu as APC’s presidential candidate was based on conviction and a clear understanding of the political direction of the country.

“When I crossed to the APC, I was the first to announce that our presidential candidate should be Senator Tinubu,” Ayade recalled. “I said it boldly on national and international platforms, including the BBC, that if Tinubu could fix Lagos, Tinubu can fix Nigeria.”

The former governor revealed that his close relationship with President Tinubu predates his emergence as president, expressing confidence in Tinubu’s capacity to deliver good governance.

“My relationship with him goes way back. He knows who I am, and he knows my worth ” Ayade said. “I can bet you, President Tinubu is very smart, and despite all the stories, he will surprise this country.”

Reflecting on his political journey and challenges, Ayade said he carries “the scars of the battle for the sovereignty of the state,” noting that his loyalty to the APC and its ideals remains unshaken.

“I’m happy today that President Tinubu is leading this country,” he said. “I took a political risk, but I saw tomorrow. The APC is working hard to build a solid system in Cross River State.”

Meanwhile, Hon. Peter Akpanke, a member representing Obanliku Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, who was at the airport to receive Ayade, also expressed confidence in the APC’s dominance in Cross River State.

Responding to questions about the opposition, Akpanke dismissed the presence of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, saying the ruling party remains firmly in control.

“Where is the ADC? Who is their arrowhead in Cross River or even in Nigeria?” Akpanke asked rhetorically. “Our governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, is doing very well. The president is doing well too. I don’t see any party that can beat the APC in this state.”

He enumerated the state government’s efforts in infrastructure, tourism, and empowerment programs. “Across the three senatorial districts, there are ongoing projects, roads, the renovation of the Governor’s Office, the Prosperous State Library, and the Peruvian Hall. The governor is doing well,” Akpanke said.

He called on residents to unite and support the government, saying, “Let us work together to bring the dividends of democracy to our people. His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, is our leader, and we will continue to support him.”
