Beyond the Podium: Giving Orok Duke His Well-Deserved Literary Flowers

In the grand tapestry of Nigerian literature, specific geographic locales have long enjoyed intense focus. The political turmoils of the West, the tragic battlegrounds of the East, and the sprawling oral epics of the North frequently dominate the academic gaze. Yet, sitting quietly on the south-eastern coast is Calabar, a city whose historical weight as a premier colonial administrative headquarters and an ancient trading port makes it a goldmine for narrative art.

Few contemporary writers have captured the modern and historical nuances of this region with the same panoramic breadth as Rt. Hon. Orok Otu Duke, PhD. Long known to the public as a political heavyweight, former Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, and public administrator, Duke’s identity as a deeply reflective literary figure is what truly cements his legacy. He is a writer who refuses to be pigeonholed. Moving seamlessly between visceral poetry, historical memoir, and modern prose, Orok Duke deserves his flowers not just as a regional chronicler, but as one of Cross River’s most versatile and significant contemporary voices.

The Anatomy of Versatility: Blending Genre and Philosophy

What sets Duke apart from his contemporaries is his capacity to balance the sharp, analytical precision of a public servant with the tender, often mournful perspective of a poet. His bibliography reads like a multi-disciplinary study of human struggle, cultural pride, and regional history.

The Poetic Conscience: Dances on the Plains, Treasures, and Winnowing

Duke’s poetry collections act as a barometer for both global and localized pain. In Dances on the Plains (Madiba, Chibok Girls and other Poems), he demonstrates a keen global awareness, linking the socio-political struggles of Nigeria with broader continental themes – paying homage to Nelson Mandela while aggressively mourning the tragic abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.

Conversely, collections like Treasures (Calabar Festivals, Idim Uyo, Forbidden Streets and Other Poems) and Winnowing pull the focus inward. Here, Duke captures the sights, sounds, and spirits of Calabar. He transforms localized landmarks like Idim Uyo into metaphors for memory, purification, and the passage of time. His poetry does not merely seek to capture beauty; it “winnows” through the chaff of modern decay to find the enduring core of cultural identity.

The Childhood Witness of Conflict: Welcome to Uyo

The Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) remains one of the most heavily documented eras in African literary history, yet it is rarely told from the distinct viewpoint of a minority South-South child. In Welcome to Uyo: The Nigerian Civil War Through the Eyes of a Calabar Child, Duke contributes a vital piece of missing history.

Born in Enugu but forced to navigate the harrowing shifts of the war across different regional terrains, Duke writes with a simplistic, raw honesty. The memoir strips away the lofty political rhetoric of military generals and presents the conflict through the visceral traumas, displacements, and small survival victories of a nuclear family.

The Modern Social Chronicler: Calabar Modern Stories

As Calabar transitioned from the colonial romanticism of “Old Calabar” into a bustling, cosmopolitan capital, its social fabric shifted dramatically. In Calabar Modern Stories, Duke offers a collection of fictionalized narratives that explore these changes. Through tales like Ekpenyong-Abasi and Ekanem and Eme and Godwin, he investigates how modern political realities, cultural practices, and social expectations intersect. He skillfully blurs the lines between folk fables, historical truths, and the daily urban struggles of a diverse population, creating a vivid portrait of contemporary Calabar life.

The Significance of His Books to the Literary World

Duke’s creative output provides immense value to the broader literary ecosystem. His books matter globally for several distinct reasons:

Decentralizing the Civil War Narrative: By documenting the realities of the Civil War from the perspective of an Efik child shifting through southeastern territories, his prose challenges the binary (Hausa/Igbo) framework through which the war is often taught, granting a voice to minority experiences during national crises.

Preservation of Minority Cultural Topography: Much of African literature translated globally focuses on major ethnic frameworks (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa). Duke’s deliberate inclusion of Calabar festivals, local street names, and regional mythologies acts as a critical archive of Efik and South-South cultural heritage, saving it from erasure in a rapidly globalizing world.

The Intersection of Art and Activism: In works like Sentinels (Farewell Bakassi) and Ellipses (Niger Delta, Leaving the Plains, Saratoga and Other Poems), Duke uses verse to dissect the painful geopolitics of the Bakassi peninsula ceding and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta. He provides the literary world with a template for how a writer can use their creative platform to process real-time regional grief and political disenfranchisement.

Time for His Literary Flowers

For decades, Orok Otu Duke has served his people across various administrative and socio-cultural fronts – as a lawmaker, a sports ambassador, and a traditional chief (Otuekong Atakpa). Yet, his most enduring gift to Cross River State, and indeed the world, is his written word.

He has painstakingly built a literary mirror in which the people of Cross River can see their history, their contemporary triumphs, and their grief reflected with dignity. It is well past time that the literary community, academics, and readers nationwide accord Rt. Hon. Orok Otu Duke, PhD his well-deserved flowers. He stands not just as a politician who happens to write, but as a masterfully versatile author whose books have quietly enriched the landscape of modern African literature.
