Orders DPOs to engage communities, stakeholders
The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has warned armed security personnel against indiscriminate gunfire during weddings, cultural festivities, political gatherings and other celebratory events in the state.
In a Friday statement signed by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Nahum Daso, the CP described the practice as reckless, unprofessional and dangerous.
He said firearms are issued strictly for the protection of lives and property and must never be used for celebration or entertainment.
“Every bullet fired into the air eventually returns to the ground and can result in the death or injury of innocent persons, as well as damage to property,” he said.
Consequently, CP Abdulmajid directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to immediately commence sustained stakeholder engagement and sensitization campaigns within their areas of responsibility.
The engagements are to involve traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders, youth groups, Vigilante Security Outfits, the Civilian Joint Task Force, and other relevant stakeholders to educate the public on the dangers and legal consequences of celebratory gunfire.
The Commissioner further warned that any armed security personnel found engaging in indiscriminate discharge of firearms or aiding such acts will be identified and subjected to appropriate disciplinary measures and other legal actions in accordance with the law.
The command also urged members of the public to support the initiative by promptly reporting anyone, including armed security personnel, found discharging firearms indiscriminately during ceremonies or public gatherings.
Reports can be made to the nearest Police Station, Divisional Headquarters, or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08068075581, 08023473293.
The vommand assured that the identity of informants would be treated with strict confidentiality.
“The Borno State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and urges all residents to celebrate responsibly and peacefully without engaging in any act capable of endangering the lives of others,” the statement added.
