Boston Celtics becomes most expensive American deal after selling for $6.1bn

The Boston Celtics have been sold for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, marking the largest sale of a sports franchise in North American history.

Bill Chisholm, managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, secured the winning bid for the 18-time NBA champions, surpassing the previous record set by Josh Harris when he purchased the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion in 2023.

The sale follows the Celtics’ victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals. Current owner Wyc Grousbeck, 63, had announced plans to sell his stake for “estate and family planning considerations.” He initially aimed to sell 51% of the team by late 2024 or early 2025, with the remaining shares set to transfer in 2028. Grousbeck, who bought the team in 2002 for $360 million, is expected to stay on as team governor until the full transition is complete.

Chisholm, a Dartmouth graduate, grew up 40 minutes outside of Boston and is known to be a longtime fan of the Celtics. Neither the team nor Chisholm has publicly commented on the sale.
