A bride price middleman was k!lled in Mwenezi, Zimbabwe, after delivering what the bride’s family considered an “insulting” bride price.
The incident occurred on February 11 in Madzvaruse Village, under Chief Mazhetese.
According to TellZim News, the middleman, known as a Munyai, had brought an initial bride price payment of just US$30 (approximately R600) on behalf of the groom’s family. The bride’s family, reportedly enraged by what they perceived as a disrespectful offer, attacked the messenger, resulting in his death.
A relative who witnessed the incident stated: “They were expecting a reasonable amount, not US$30. When they heard this, tempers flared. They accused the Munyai of disrespecting their daughter and took matters into their own hands.”
The disagreement quickly turned violent, with the Munyai being fatally beaten by the bride’s family members.
Authorities have arrested one suspect in connection with the k!lling, while other alleged perpetrators remain at large. The police have launched an investigation to track down the remaining suspects.
A local villager, speaking anonymously, expressed shock over the incident: “This is shocking. Disagreements over bride price happen, but no one expected it to end in death. The Munyai was just the messenger.”
Mwenezi police have urged families to resolve disputes peacefully. A spokesperson stated:
“We strongly discourage violence in such matters. Families should resolve differences through dialogue, not brutality.” The k!lling has left the community in disbelief, with one elder lamenting:
“Bride price is meant to bring families together, not tear them apart. This is tragic.” The case is expected to go to court soon as authorities continue their search for the remaining suspects.
