ABUJA (CONVERSEER) – The Federal Government has postponed the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 15th July 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, due to his state funeral taking place the same day in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday, 14th July 2025, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) is expected to announce a new date for the special FEC session following the conclusion of funeral proceedings.
In a further mark of respect, the Federal Government has declared Tuesday, 15th July 2025, a public holiday nationwide in honour of the departed statesman.
President Bola Tinubu had ordered the special session to recognise the “invaluable contributions” of former President Buhari to the development of the country during his time in office.
The body of the late President is expected to arrive Nigeria from London by noon on Tuesday. He will be buried the same day in Daura, his hometown, according to Islamic rites.
President Buhari passed away on Sunday, 13th July 2025, at a clinic in London after a prolonged illness. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes across the country and from the international community.
In a tribute to his predecessor, President Tinubu declared a seven-day national mourning period with national flags ordered to be flown at half-mast across the country.
Vice President Kashim Shettima and the President’s Chief of Staff, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, were directed to travel to London to condole with the Buhari family and accompany the former President’s remains back to Nigeria.
The funeral and subsequent honours mark the passing of a leader who served as Nigeria’s President from 2015 to 2023, having previously led the country as a military Head of State between 1983 and 1985.
