Building A Better Akwa Ibom: Governor Umo Eno And The 11 Key Development Bills

By Emmanuel Ndon

Governor Umo Eno’s administration in Akwa Ibom State is steadily laying a solid foundation for sustainable development—one that touches lives, strengthens institutions and prepares the state for a more prosperous future.

On April 7, 2026, the Governor chaired a strategic meeting of the State Executive Council at the Government House in Uyo. Far from a routine gathering, the session marked a significant step forward as the Council approved 11 key Executive Bills designed to strengthen governance, improve service delivery and advance the administration’s ARISE Agenda. These bills have since been transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration.

At the heart of these approvals is a clear vision: to build a system that works better for the people.

Leading the list is the Hotels and Tourism Development Commission Bill, which seeks to regulate and promote the hospitality sector. By setting standards and attracting investment, the initiative is expected to boost tourism, create jobs and diversify the state’s economy.

The Lottery Regulatory Agency Bill introduces a transparent framework for lottery operations, ensuring fairness while generating revenue that can be reinvested into public development projects. In the same vein, the Geographic Information Service Bill brings modern technology into land administration, improving planning, reducing disputes and enabling smarter development decisions across the state.

Recognising the importance of social welfare, the administration approved the Senior Citizens Centre Management Agency Bill. This initiative will provide comprehensive care, healthcare support and dignity for the elderly, ensuring that those who have contributed to society are not left behind.

Youth empowerment also takes centre stage through the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre Bill. By equipping young people with practical, in-demand skills, the government is not only addressing unemployment but also nurturing innovation and self-reliance.

In the health sector, two critical bills stand out. The Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Systems Agency Bill establishes a coordinated rapid-response system that can save lives in emergencies. At the same time, the Hospitals Management Board (Amendment) Bill aims to improve efficiency, accountability and the overall quality of care in public hospitals.

Access to justice is equally prioritised through the Office of the Public Defender Bill, which ensures that citizens, regardless of financial status, can receive legal representation and fair treatment under the law.

Other approvals, including the Water User Association Bill, the Ibom Broadcasting Corporation Bill, and the State Honours and Awards Bill, further demonstrate a comprehensive approach to governance—one that addresses essential services, information dissemination and the recognition of excellence in society.

Taken together, these legislative efforts reflect a government that is not only active but also intentional, focused on building systems that endure, policies that include everyone, and opportunities that reach every corner of Akwa Ibom State.

This is more than policy-making. It is a commitment to progress you can see, feel, and benefit from.

As these initiatives move toward implementation, they offer a clear indication of the administration’s direction: progress. His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, deserves commendation for his visionary leadership, unwavering commitment to service, and dedication to building a stronger, more prosperous Akwa Ibom State. For citizens, the choice ahead is about continuity, to sustain a vision that is already translating into tangible results.
