A terrorist attack near Cameroon’s border with Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of twelve Cameroonian soldiers, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense.
The heavily armed jihadist militants targeted a position belonging to Sector III of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) on Wednesday.
The attack left twelve soldiers dead, with their bodies transferred to the morgue of Regional Military Hospital No. 4 in Maroua.
A dozen others were injured and evacuated to the Renaissance Hospital in N’Djamena for medical treatment.
In response, military forces from Sectors I (Cameroon) and III (Nigeria) of the MNJTF launched immediate search operations to track down the assailants. The Minister Delegate to the Presidency in charge of Defence conveyed the Head of State’s condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, the minister assured that Cameroonian forces would intensify their operations to neutralize the attackers.
This latest assault regional security experts say, underscores the persistent security threats in the Lake Chad region, where armed jihadist groups continue to carry out attacks, posing significant challenges to regional stability.
