President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on Canadian imports has sparked anger among Canadians, and the backlash has already spilled over into the world of sports.

The tension was palpable during an NHL game on Saturday night when the Ottawa Senators hosted the Minnesota Wild at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ontario.

The political drama unfolded before the puck dropped, during the singing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Ottawa-based singer Mandia took to the ice to perform the American national anthem, but her rendition was met with boos from the largely Canadian crowd of nearly 20,000 fans. Despite the hostile reaction, Mandia powered through and completed the performance.

The crowd’s reaction was fueled by Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, which is set to take effect Tuesday, February 4, alongside a 10% tariff on goods imported from China. The move has heightened trade tensions, with Canada and Mexico responding by introducing tariffs on American products.

President Trump defended the tariffs, stating they would remain in place until Canada, Mexico, and China took action to curb the influx of fentanyl and undocumented immigrants into the United States. The controversial measures have prompted fears of a protracted trade war between the countries.

Amid the political drama, the Ottawa Senators gave their fans something to cheer about, routing the Minnesota Wild with a commanding 6-0 victory. However, the incident during the anthem underscored the growing strain in U.S.-Canada relations under the Trump administration. With both sides digging in, it appears the tension may persist well into Trump’s term.
