Chad is grappling with an escalating humanitarian crisis as over 763,000 Sudanese refugees have fled into the country’s eastern regions since April 2023.
The crisis has intensified in 2024, with more than 40,000 new arrivals so far, including 21,027 in February alone—a 30% increase from January.
In response, authorities have relocated over 3,600 refugees to better-equipped sites within two weeks while launching awareness campaigns.
The government has also introduced the 2025 Humanitarian and Refugee Response Plan (RRP), requiring $5.5 billion in funding, including $701 million for refugee aid.
However, only 14% of the estimated $409.4 million needed for 2025 operations has been secured.
A revised relocation strategy aims to accommodate up to 280,000 refugees across 10 new sites. Meanwhile, Chad is also dealing with 220,610 internally displaced persons and 317,279 spontaneous returns, primarily in the Lake region.
The UNHCR and humanitarian partners are urging immediate resource mobilization to prevent further deterioration of the crisis.
