Coco-Bassey to declare for 2027 governorship seat, unveils AHEAD agenda

By Our Reporter

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – In what is already generating momentum across political and socio-economic circles, Engr. Mkpang Coco-Bassey, PhD, is poised to formally declare his intention to contest for the office of Governor of Cross River State in the 2027 general elections under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), unveiling a transformative agenda anchored on the theme: AHEAD 2027.

A seasoned engineer, global professional, and grassroots humanitarian, Engr. Coco-Bassey’s anticipated entry into the race is widely regarded as a defining moment in the quest for purposeful leadership, strategic governance, and people-centred development in Cross River State.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised in Calabar, Engr. Coco-Bassey embodies both global exposure and deep local roots. His early return to Nigeria at the age of three, driven by his parents’ patriotic commitment, laid the foundation for a lifelong connection with the people and culture of Cross River State, particularly his home in Calabar South Local Government Area.

His academic journey reflects discipline, excellence, and a relentless pursuit of knowledge. Beginning at Bishop King Memorial Primary School and Duke Town Secondary School, he proceeded to obtain a Higher National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering before advancing to the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree. He further distinguished himself with a Master’s degree in Control Systems Engineering, an MBA from the University of East London, and a PhD in Communication Engineering. He is also a registered member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

Professionally, Engr. Coco-Bassey has built an impressive global career, working with multinational corporations across more than 30 countries. As a Project Assurance Lead within the Security, Strategy and Investment division of a leading multinational firm, he has consistently demonstrated capacity in leadership, risk management, and high-level project delivery, skills widely seen as critical to effective governance.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he is a renowned humanitarian and philanthropist. As Chairman of the Coco Bassey Foundation and current President of the Calabar Forum in the United Kingdom and Ireland, he has championed initiatives focused on improving access to quality education and uplifting disadvantaged children in Cross River State. His commitment to service reflects a leadership philosophy rooted in compassion, inclusion, and sustainable impact.

Unveiling his vision under the AHEAD 2027 agenda, Engr. Coco-Bassey outlined a strategic framework designed to reposition Cross River State for accelerated growth and shared prosperity:

A – Action: Delivering decisive, transparent, and results-driven governance.

H – Hope Rekindled: Restoring public confidence through integrity, accountability, and inclusive leadership.

E – Empowerment: Creating opportunities for youth, women, and entrepreneurs through skills, funding, and innovation.

A – Altitude: Elevating Cross River’s economic standing through industrialisation, tourism revival, and global partnerships.

D – Development: Driving sustainable infrastructure, education, healthcare, and rural transformation.

Political observers note that his candidacy represents a fusion of technocratic competence and grassroots empathy, qualities increasingly demanded by a populace eager for a new direction.

Speaking ahead of his expected declaration, Engr. Coco-Bassey emphasised the urgency of visionary leadership: “Cross River State stands at a critical juncture. The time has come to move beyond rhetoric and embrace pragmatic, people-focused governance that delivers measurable progress. AHEAD 2027 is not just a slogan, it is a commitment to action, renewal, and sustainable development.”

Married to Helen from Akamkpa Local Government Area, Engr. Coco-Bassey is described by associates as a bridge-builder, a strategic thinker, and a unifying force capable of galvanising diverse interests towards a common goal.

As the political landscape gradually shapes ahead of the 2027 elections, his emergence under the ADC banner signals a potentially formidable challenge to the status quo, offering Cross Riverians a fresh, credible, and forward-looking alternative.

With a compelling blend of global experience, local understanding, and a clearly articulated vision, Engr. Mkpang Coco-Bassey’s gubernatorial ambition is poised to redefine the narrative of leadership and development in Cross River State.
