Marvel Studios has officially announced Black Panther III, confirming that British actor David Jonsson will lead the next chapter of the blockbuster superhero franchise as the son of T’Challa, succeeding the late Chadwick Boseman in one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most iconic roles.

The announcement was made on Saturday during Marvel’s highly anticipated Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, where Jonsson appeared before thousands of fans after months of speculation surrounding the future of the Black Panther franchise. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on December 15, 2028.

Jonsson, best known for his performances in HBO’s Industry and the 2025 film The Long Walk, will portray T’Challa’s son, ushering in a new era for Wakanda following Boseman’s death in 2020. Boseman, whose portrayal of the Black Panther transformed the character into a global cultural icon, died at the age of 43 after a private battle with colon cancer.

Addressing fans during the Comic-Con presentation, an emotional Jonsson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join the celebrated franchise.

“Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour, the privilege and the blessing to join,” he said. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let this screen do the talking.”

Oscar-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who directed both Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, confirmed he will return to direct the third instalment. Coogler described the project as a significant new chapter for the franchise, saying the story will centre on T’Challa’s son as he matures and embraces the responsibility of carrying forward his father’s legacy as Wakanda’s protector.

“Today is extra special,” Coogler told the Comic-Con audience before outlining the direction of the film, which he said will explore the challenges of legacy, leadership and identity through the eyes of a new Black Panther.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige joined Coogler and Jonsson on stage to unveil the project, reinforcing the studio’s commitment to expanding one of its most successful franchises while honouring the legacy left behind by Boseman.

Released in 2018, the original Black Panther became a landmark achievement for Marvel, earning more than $1.3 billion at the global box office and receiving widespread critical acclaim. The film featured an acclaimed ensemble cast including Michael B. Jordan, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Danai Gurira and Letitia Wright, several of whom returned for the sequel following Boseman’s death.

The announcement of Black Panther III was among the biggest highlights of this year’s Comic-Con, generating immediate excitement among fans eager to see how Marvel will continue one of the studio’s most influential and commercially successful film franchises.
