The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) has urged maiden-inducted graduates of the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) to adhere strictly to regulations of the profession.
Prof Okorie Uche, the Registrar of COREN, said this in Nsukka on Tuesday during the 1st Induction/Oath-taking of 250 graduates of the Faculty of Engineering, UNN.
Uche congratulated the graduates for the successful completion of their course that qualified them for the Induction.
The Registrar urged the inductees to ensure they maintained the high professional conduct of the engineering profession
“As you take this oath, I urge you all to maintain high professional conduct of the engineering profession.
“Engineering is a noble profession and the Council frowns on any act of professional misconduct,” he said.
He commended parents of inductees for investing in the education of their children and wards as well as the faculty of engineering UNN for adequate knowledge given to the graduates.
In a remark, Prof Simon Ortuanya, the Vice-Chancellor of UNN, said the event was a landmark achievement in the history of the university and a testament to the unwavering commitment of UNN to academic excellence.
“I congratulate the Dean, members of staff, students and the entire faculty of engineering for attaining this important milestone.
“I warmly welcome our distinguished guests, COREN and the Nigeria Society of Engineers.
“We appreciate your continued partnership in strengthening engineering education and ensuring that graduates are prepared to meet the highest standard of professional practice,” he said.
The VC, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration, Prof Michael Onyia, said the day remains a special day for inductees as it marked a new phase in their lives.
“As ambassadors of the university, let your conduct reflect the ideals of this great institution.
“Continue to learn, innovate and use your knowledge to address the challenges facing our communities, our nation and the entire world,” he said.
Earlier in a remark, Prof Ikechukwu Ike-Eze, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, UNN, said that the event marks a defining moment in the history of the faculty.
“We are formally inducting our graduating engineers into the engineering profession, signifying our commitment to academic excellence, professional standards, and ethical engineering practice.
“This ceremony is not merely a celebration of academic success; it is the beginning of a lifelong professional journey founded on competence, integrity, innovation, and service to humanity.
“On behalf of the faculty, I express our sincere appreciation to COREN for approving the induction ceremony and for its unwavering commitment to regulating and advancing engineering practice in Nigeria,” he said.
Speaking further, the Dean urged the inductees to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, competence, and ethical conduct.
“As graduates of the University of Nigeria, you carry the reputation of one of Africa’s foremost institutions.
“Let your knowledge be guided by wisdom, your innovation by integrity, and your success by your positive impact on society,” he said.
Also, in a remark, Dr Gerald Akubue, Branch Chairman, Nigeria Society of Engineers, Nsukka, said that the Oath-taking and induction ceremony is more than a celebration of academic success.
According to him, it marks the beginning of a lifelong commitment to professional excellence.
“I congratulate the inductee for reaching this important milestone. Your degree has opened the door, but your future will be shaped by your character, continuous learning, innovation and commitment to ethical practice,” he said.
In an interview, one of the inductees, Chukwuemeka Ukoh, said he is overwhelmed with joy to be among the first set of engineering graduates in UNN to be inducted into COREN.
Chukwuemeka expressed special gratitude to God for giving him life and his parents for investing in his education, as well as their support to him in all ramifications
Our Correspondent reports that Prof Chigbo Mgbemene presented an induction lecture while Prof. Clifford Nwoji chaired the event.
Some officials of COREN and the Nigeria Society of Engineers were present during the Induction.
The highlight of the occasion was oath-taking by 250 inductees.
