CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – A Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar has convicted and sentenced Uduak Etim Udo, a 39-year-old man, to life imprisonment for raping an 8-year-old girl.

Converseer reports that Udo was sentenced on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, by Hon. Justice Blessing Egwu of the State High Court.

The convict committed the crime in March 2025 in Calabar.

His conviction was secured by Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI), a non-governmental organisation which promotes and protects the fundamental rights of children and indigent women.

Reacting to the judgment, James Ibor, Esq., Principal Counsel of BRCI, said the outcome shows that justice is possible when institutions carry out their legal duties without compromise.

He commended the State’s Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid Afegbua; Attorney General, Ededem Ani, and the DPP Okoi Ukam for their commitment to safeguard the future of our children. “Thank you Rajunor Tom for your diligence in prosecuting this case,” he added.

BRCI recognise the importance of this judgment because it reflects the work of individuals who refused to overlook a child’s suffering but ensured the law took its course.

The NGO has secured the conviction of three rapists in the last two months.
