Cross River state government has declared that the state is safe to host all events contradicting its earlier statement cancelling the Agbokim marathon raising security concerns.
The state government in a release dated November 23 and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Linus Obogo, said the “state government wishes to assure delegates, athletes, officials, and the general public that Calabar remains one of Nigeria’s safest and most welcoming destinations, fully prepared to host the National Council on Sports this week”.
The release said, “recent speculations suggesting insecurity are unfounded and do not reflect the serene, orderly, and peaceful reality across the state”.
The release further stated that, “only a few days ago, Cross River successfully hosted the National Council on Health, attended by the Honourable minister of Health and key stakeholders nationwide, an event conducted seamlessly, peacefully, and with the state’s trademark warmth and efficiency.
“Under the steadfast leadership of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, the state’s security architecture has been strengthened, ensuring residents and visitors enjoy uninterrupted safety.
“Cross River remains calm, secure, and ever-hospitable, fully ready to host national and international events of every scale with excellence and confidence”.
But in an earlier undated statement by the state government released on November 20, stated that Governor Otu has canceled the 2025 Agbokim Marathon amid security concerns and vowed a stronger return.
The statement which was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the State, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh said, the state governor, has directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, following what he described as the “prevailing national security realities” requiring cautious action and responsible planning.
Enoh, said the Governor considered it necessary to halt this year’s edition to ensure the event is properly fortified in future. “His Excellency believes the marathon deserves comprehensive, multidimensional support, and that requires adequate preparation”..
He said the government is committed to enhancing the event’s long-term value, noting that security considerations must take precedence as “the safety of participants, organisers and spectators remains paramount”.
Governor Otu expressed regret over the inconvenience the cancellation may cause athletes, partners and organizers.
He assured that subsequent editions will have the touch of Cross River state by making it an event of national pride and attention.
