CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – In celebration of World Tourism Day 2025, Cross River State, through its Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, has launched a series of activities and policy initiatives aimed at fostering sustainable growth in its tourism sector on 29th September, reinforcing its status as Nigeria’s premier destination for nature, culture, and heritage.
Embracing the global theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” alongside the national theme, “Tourism for Sustainable Growth,” the Ministry showcased tourism’s potential to transform communities, economies, and environments, emphasising that value extends beyond mere visitor numbers.
In his keynote address, Sir Gabe Onah, Chairman of the Carnival Commission, stated that tourism, rooted in our culture, defines our identity.
He emphasised that responsible tourism is crucial to achieving sustainable growth, asserting that it must be aligned with environmental protection, health, safety, community benefits, and long-term stewardship.
Earlier during the opening of the celebrations, Pastor (Mrs) Eme Affiah, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, reaffirmed that this year’s celebration reflects the transformative power of tourism as a catalyst for development, inclusivity, and cultural preservation.
According to her, the themes resonated deeply with the collective aspirations of the State and the nation, underscoring tourism’s vital role in driving economic growth, creating job opportunities, empowering communities, and preserving unique cultural heritage.
“Our celebration this year is a call to action and an opportunity to recommit ourselves to promoting tourism as a key pillar of sustainable development through collaboration among government, the private sector, communities, and individuals, positioning our State as the leading destination,” she added.
The events featured vibrant cultural performances, dances, drama, and presentations from local secondary schools, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of Cross River State.
