C’River: Ugaga, Igbekurekor Embrace Peace, End Communal Clash

The long-standing communal clash between the neighbouring Ugaga and Igbekurekor communities in Yala Local Government Area of Criss River State has come to an end as they formally agreed to embrace peace and harmony.

The successful mediation efforts were spearheaded by Hon. Brian Odey, member representing Yala I State Constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly.

In a culmination of several meetings involving community leaders, youth representatives, and other stakeholders, Hon. Odey passionately urged both communities to prioritise peace above all else.

He emphasised that, despite the provocation that initially led to the conflict, the people of Ugaga and Igbekurekor are, in essence, brothers and sisters who can resolve their differences through dialogue.

Odey reiterated the belief that there is no misunderstanding too significant to be resolved through peaceful means. He highlighted the paramount importance of peaceful coexistence and called for an end to further loss of lives, and property, and the erosion of peace within the communities. Violence, he emphasised, is an archaic and unacceptable means of conflict resolution.

“This fight is unnecessary because it has already taken a negative toll on Yala’s image and the economic fortunes of both villages,” Hon. Odey stated.

“It is irresponsible for communities that have coexisted for so long to resort to wanton destruction of lives and property over a land dispute. At this point, it is necessary to sheathe your swords and tolerate one another for peace to reign,” he added.

The journey towards reconciliation was the formal agreement by both Ugaga and Igbekurekor communities to end hostilities and promote peace. The signing of this agreement signifies a new era of cooperation and understanding between these communities, bringing hope for a brighter and more harmonious future.
