Cross River Assembly adds 90 days to Bekwarra Chairman's suspension

Hon. Theresa Ushie

By Ukorebi Essien, TDN

CALABAR (TDN, CONVERSEER) – The Cross River State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of the Chairman of Bekwarra Local Government Council, Theresa Ushie, for another 90 days to allow its investigative committee to conclude its probe into allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Ushie was first suspended in June 2025 after eight councillors petitioned the Assembly, accusing her of corruption and maladministration. Following her suspension, the Vice Chairman, Egbung Odama, was sworn in as acting chairman.

Presenting an interim report during plenary on Thursday, Deputy Leader of the House, Davies Etta, said the Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petitions and Public Resolution had engaged both parties and held a stakeholders’ meeting in Bekwarra but needed more time to gather documentary evidence.

A motion to extend the suspension was moved by the member representing Obubra I State Constituency, Ovat Agbor, and seconded by Francis Ogban of Biase State Constituency. The House adopted the motion through a voice vote.

With the extension, the suspension now runs until December 2025, when the committee is expected to present a conclusive report.
