The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Emmanuel Adoga, over allegations of rape and armed robbery in Ogoja Local Government Area of the state.
The police said the suspect was arrested on October 12, 2026, following a petition submitted on October 9, by the father of the 22-year-old survivor on her behalf.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, on October 16, the petition alleged that Adoga threatened the survivor with a dangerous object, had unlawful sexual intercourse with her and forcefully took her Infinix Smart 7 mobile phone.
The petition further alleged that the suspect demanded an additional ₦15,000 from the survivor.
The command said police operatives launched an investigation after receiving the report, leading to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of the allegedly stolen mobile phone.
Investigators also visited the reported scene and obtained relevant photographic and electronic evidence as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The police said preliminary investigations were examining allegations that the suspect used a hammer, allegedly presented as a firearm, to threaten the survivor.
According to the command, efforts are ongoing to recover the suspected object and determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The survivor has undergone medical examination and is receiving treatment, the statement said, adding that the command remains committed to protecting her dignity, welfare and privacy.
The police added that further investigative steps, including a possible referral to the State Criminal Investigation Department, would be taken in line with established procedures.
It said the case would be processed for further action in accordance with the law after the conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, reiterated the command’s commitment to investigating allegations of sexual violence and other serious crimes professionally and in accordance with due process.
Ordue urged members of the public to report criminal incidents promptly to the nearest police station.
He also cautioned the public and media organisations against circulating names, photographs or other information capable of identifying or further traumatising survivors of sexual violence.
The allegations against Adoga remain subject to investigation, and the police have not announced the conclusion of the case.
