The Orthopedic Team at 14 Military Hospital, led by Dr. Fidel Agyei Asante, Specialist Orthopedic and Trauma Surgeon, has successfully performed the hospital’s first Latarjet Operation, also known as the Latarjet-Bristow procedure — a surgical procedure used to treat recurrent anterior shoulder dislocations with a history of trauma, typically caused by bone loss or a fracture of the glenoid.

The patient, a 46-year-old male, sustained a left shoulder injury following a road traffic accident, which subsequently led to recurrent dislocation of the left shoulder.

After several X-ray evaluations, the procedure was carried out over 3 hours, with no incidence of recurrence recorded two (2) months post-surgery.

He had both his primary and secondary education in Ghana, attained a Doctor of Medicine degree at Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, Ukraine, and later pursued a Master of Medicine in Orthopedics and Trauma at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Tanzania.

He has also worked in Sierra Leone for seven (7) years and has been involved in health innovation for the past fourteen (14) years, with multiple prototypes for different disciplines in the health sector.
