Background
Dr Ukpata Joseph Onah is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), and currently serves as Director of Research and Development/Centre of Excellence of the University.
He is the immediate-past Head of Department of the Department of Civil Engineering and former Director of SIWES (Supervised Industrial Works Experience Scheme).
He hails from Okpoma in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State.
COREN registered Civil Engineer, Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), and Associate Cost Engineer. He served as Chairman of The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Calabar Branch between 2018 and 2020.
He is a member some international professional Associations, including the Institution of Concrete Technology and Association for Project Management, both of United Kingdom.
His research interest is in development of locally available cements, low-carbon cements and durability of cements and concrete.

Innovations
In 2025, Dr Ukpata developed an automated garri frying machine, known as JollyFryer. He did it with four other lecturers.
