D’Tigers eye 2027 FIBA World Cup ticket after AfroBasket qualification

Nigeria’s Men’s Basketball team, D’Tigers, is set to battle for a spot in the 2027 FIBA World Cup, with qualifiers kicking off in November. The team, along with 15 other African nations, will compete for a place in the prestigious global tournament set to take place in Qatar.

Following their remarkable comeback to secure a ticket to the AfroBasket 2025 Championship in Angola (August 12-24), D’Tigers are now shifting their focus to reclaiming their spot on the world stage after missing out on the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which was co-hosted by Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Nigeria will be joined in the qualifiers by other African basketball powerhouses, including Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Rwanda, Senegal, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Uganda. The tournament draw, which will determine the qualification pathway, is scheduled for May 13.

With a renewed sense of determination, D’Tigers are eager to build on their impressive AfroBasket qualification campaign and secure their place among the world’s best teams.
