ISMAILIA (CONVERSEER) – Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have sealed their place at the FIFA U20 World Cup finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over reigning champions Senegal at the CAF U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt on Monday.
In a tense quarter-final clash at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, the two West African heavyweights battled to a goalless draw across 120 minutes before Nigeria triumphed 3-1 on penalties to book their spot in the World Cup.
Hero of the night was goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, who made a crucial save in the 54th minute to deny Senegal’s Ibrahima Dieng and then stood tall in the shootout, saving two penalties before Ousmane Konate struck the woodwork to end the contest.
The Flying Eagles responded to the rallying cry issued by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, who urged the team on Saturday to show renewed spirit and resolve.

The game began with high tempo as both teams looked to assert dominance, with Senegal’s Dieng twice coming close—once in the 27th minute after a fumble by Harcourt, and again just before the break when his header grazed the upright.
Nigeria grew into the game in the second half and nearly took the lead through Divine Oliseh and Kparobo Arierhi, while substitute Precious Benjamin also missed a clear opportunity.
Extra time saw Nigeria push harder, with Tahir Maigana testing Senegal’s Mouhamed Sissokho from range, and Israel Ayuma forcing a spectacular save from a curling free-kick.
In the shootout, Harcourt saved Senegal’s opening kick from Pierre Diatta Dorival, while Nigeria converted through Benjamin, Emmanuel Chukwu and Ayuma. Senegal managed to score just once from four attempts.
NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau praised the team’s character, saying, “The ticket to the World Cup was the first objective and we have achieved that. The second objective is to win the trophy, and after congratulating the team for their effort, I have reminded them that the country is waiting for them to bring the trophy back home.”
Nigeria will now face the winner of the clash between South Africa and DR Congo in the semi-finals, with one eye on lifting their eighth continental title.
