The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on the Federal Government to ensure that ongoing economic reforms are backed by compassionate palliatives and inclusive policies that directly benefit the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians.
The Council made the appeal in a statement on Tuesday to
mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year, 1448 AH.
It stated that while reforms may be necessary, they must be accompanied by measures that cushion the hardship faced by ordinary citizens.
Signed by the NSCIA Public Affairs Officer, Abbas Jimoh, the statement noted that high living costs, rising food prices and unemployment continue to place severe pressure on households across the country.
“While the government implements necessary reforms, the NSCIA urges that these policies be accompanied by compassionate palliatives and economic inclusion strategies that reach the poorest of the poor and most vulnerable,” the Council stated.
The NSCIA, under the leadership of its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the world on the beginning of the new Islamic calendar year following the sighting of the Muharram moon.
The Council, however, expressed concern over the nation’s security challenges, including banditry, insurgency and the growing cases of kidnapping across various parts of the country.
According to the Council, the recent abductions involving schoolchildren and teachers underscore the urgent need for decisive action to safeguard lives and property.
It called on all tiers of government, security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders to intensify efforts toward restoring peace and security nationwide.
The NSCIA also urged political leaders to place national interest above partisan considerations and demonstrate integrity, accountability and inclusiveness in governance.
While acknowledging the difficult circumstances facing the nation, the Council encouraged Nigerians to remain united and reject divisive narratives based on religion or ethnicity.
The Council prayed for lasting peace, security, prosperity and sustainable development in Nigeria and wished Muslims a peaceful and spiritually rewarding Hijrah 1448 AH.
