EFCC Debunks Viral Naira Abuse Claims at Senator Goje’s Daughter’s Wedding, Identifies Real Culprits

Kano, Nigeria – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a recent viral video showing the spraying of naira notes at a wedding in Kano State, initially reported to have occurred at the wedding of Mrs Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje.

The commission has now identified the actual event and persons involved in the alleged naira abuse, affirming its commitment to maintaining accountability in currency use.

According to a statement from the EFCC, the viral incident, which sparked nationwide attention and was highlighted in a leading editorial, did not take place at Mrs Goje’s wedding, but rather at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah. Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, popularly known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria and CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, held her wedding dinner on October 24, 2024.

Following a detailed analysis of the footage, the EFCC confirmed that the lavish display of cash was orchestrated by guests from the groom’s family, hailing from Niger Republic.

Haruna has verified this account, admitting that naira notes and dollar bills were indeed sprayed during her daughter’s wedding celebration and that the groom’s family members were responsible.

The EFCC has extended an invitation to the groom, Ibrahim Mohammad, requesting his appearance at the commission’s national headquarters in Abuja, along with others who allegedly participated in the naira spraying at his wedding.

The EFCC, as the country’s chief anti-corruption watchdog, has reaffirmed its dedication to eradicating currency abuse and dollarisation in the economy, a goal it remains steadfastly committed to, despite the challenges.

It assured the public that while it values the vigilance sparked by its campaigns against currency abuse, it will avoid unjustly penalising individuals wrongly associated with such acts.

The EFCC Head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, emphasised that no offender, irrespective of their social standing, will be spared in this ongoing campaign.
