EPL: ‘It hasn’t worked’ – Paul Merson pinpoints key issue in Chelsea deals for Welbeck, Henderson

Arsenal icon, Paul Merson, has warned Chelsea that Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson must be given regular playing time to sustain their performance levels.

He asserted that optimal results can be achieved from the pair if they are granted consistent minutes on the field.

In his column on Sky Sports’ website, Merson expressed his pleasure at Chelsea’s signing of the experienced players.

He commended the intentions to recruit Welbeck and Henderson.

He stated, “I have consistently advocated for Chelsea to incorporate experience into their squad. These two players bring that experience.

“Previously, they have pursued younger talent with lengthy contracts, but if that strategy had been successful, they would have been the most dominant team globally for many years. However, it has not unfolded that way. Therefore, it is essential to blend experience with these younger players.

“While they are acquiring promising young talent, the value of experience cannot be overstated. It is invaluable. These players will not feature in every match when things are going well. Yet, during challenging games when the crowd becomes restless, that experience is crucial, trust me.”

Nonetheless, he promptly warned Xabi Alonso, emphasizing that the duo must be utilized frequently in matches to preserve their fitness and form. He warned that they could struggle if relegated to mere roles in the dressing room.

He added, “I have a fondness for Welbeck. His performance record over the past two years at Brighton has been remarkable.

“However, he has played a significant amount of football, and at his age, he needs to continue playing regularly. Analyzing his statistics, he participated in over 30 matches last year and similarly the year before. This season, he is unlikely to reach that number.

“It becomes challenging to maintain form when you are not consistently playing, especially as you age. Continuous play is essential; sporadic appearances do not suffice.

“I understand this from my own experience, having played into my 30s. Regular participation was necessary, and when that was lacking, it became difficult. I anticipate Henderson will be utilized as a closer in the final 15 or 20 minutes of matches.”

Welbeck played 2267 minutes in the Premier League last season in his 37 matches, scoring 13 goals.

Jordan Henderson played 1924 minutes across 32 Premier League games, scoring once and assisting thrice.
