LOMÉ (CONVERSEER) – The Government of Togo has accused individuals based abroad of orchestrating a disinformation campaign that led to violent unrest in several Lomé neighbourhoods from 26 to 26 June.

In a statement, authorities claimed the unrest was fueled by social media and civil society groups opposing recent constitutional reforms, which granted President Faure Gnassingbé an indefinite leadership role as President of the Council of Ministers.

The government described the developments as a foreign-led attempt to destabilise public order and republican institutions.

Security forces, with support from local communities, swiftly intervened to contain the violence, resulting in multiple arrests, including foreigners who had entered the country illegally.

The government announced legal proceedings against those allegedly involved and called for international cooperation to prosecute individuals behind the campaign.

Authorities also rejected any connection between recent drownings and the protests, citing forensic evidence, and reiterated their commitment to the rule of law, political pluralism, and national unity.
