Charles Bassey, a former Green Eagles defender and a member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, has passed away following a prolonged illness.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed his death in a statement issued on Sunday.
Bassey died on Saturday, April 12, in his hometown of Eket, Akwa Ibom State, just hours after the death of Christian Chukwu, another legendary figure from the same 1980 Eagles team. The two losses have cast a heavy shadow over Nigerian football, as the country mourns the passing of two iconic players from its golden generation.
In 2019, Bassey publicly revealed that he had been battling a spinal condition, nerve root compression, stemming from a car accident in 1986. He shared that the injury had worsened over the years, leaving him with difficulty walking and in need of urgent medical care. His condition prompted a public appeal for financial assistance. In 2021, he disclosed that the Femi Otedola Foundation had come to his aid by sponsoring a spinal cord surgery.
Beyond his achievements on the pitch, Bassey had a long career in football management, leading several clubs in the Nigerian league. His coaching resume included stints with Calabar Rovers, Wikki Tourists of Bauchi, BCC Lions of Gboko, Flash Flamingos, Mobil Pegasus of Eket, and Akwa United Football Club. His contributions to Nigerian football spanned decades, from his playing days to his leadership on the sidelines.
Bassey’s death marks the ninth loss from Nigeria’s celebrated 1980 AFCON-winning team. Other departed members include Best Ogedegbe, Moses Effiong, Christian Chukwu, Okechukwu Isima, Tunde Bamidele, Aloysius Atuegbu, Mudashiru Lawal, and Martins Eyo. The passing of yet another member of that historic squad underscores the passage of a generation that helped lay the foundation for Nigerian football’s rise on the continental stage.
