Ghana Cuts Independence Day Celebration Cost, Saves Over GHC 13 Million

Ghana has reduced its Independence Day celebration expenses, saving over GHC 13 million compared to last year’s event.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Day commemoration at the Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama revealed that this year’s celebration cost only GHC 1.5 million, a sharp decline from the GHC 15 million spent in 2024.

He noted that if the event had been held on a grand scale similar to previous years, the cost would have reached approximately GHC 20 million.

Last year’s celebration in Ho cost GHC 13.7 million. However, the government opted for a modest event this year to cut expenses.

Unlike past years when the celebrations took place at Black Star Square with large parades and regional ceremonies, this year’s event was held at the seat of government under the theme “Reflect, Review, Reset.”

The celebration featured a Military Guard of Honour reviewed by the President and a cultural performance by two groups of basic school pupils.

President Mahama emphasized that the reduced scale of the event did not diminish its significance, reinforcing the need for financial prudence while honoring Ghana’s independence.
