Gospel singer Buchi Atuonwu, known simply as Buchi has disclosed that he was a cultist before accepting Jesus Christ.
Speaking in an interview with Gaise Baba on ‘Black Flame’, Buchi said he realised that the cult wasn’t a physical group, but rather a spiritual entity.
Responding to the question from the host about how he left the cult, Buchi recounted how Jesus redefined his understanding of cultism, showing him that it was more than secret meetings and rituals, it was a spiritual battlefield.
Buchi said he understood that he couldn’t fight spiritual battles with physical means, so he turned to Jesus Christ and became a gospel singer.
He said: “Exiting the cult. Jesus, I had a deeper understanding of the cult. Jesus showed me the meaning of the cult that it was not a physical association. You can’t bring a knife to a gun fight and hope to win. It’s a spiritual thing. And much of what I was protesting and fighting were spiritual, so a physical solution will not do.
“One day I was in a company of about 200 people, and I was their singer, no microphone, and it was between 1am-2am. I had to be loud and commanding enough for everyone to hear me. And we were going on a voyage, some people had a coffin on their head, some carried the red lamp (danger) and we were on a procession and I was leading in songs.
“I was singing and the convoy was to my right but from the left someone spoke into my ears and said, you don’t belong here. I was startled but I couldn’t stop singing and the procession was moving and these were all young men and old ready to do damage. The cult is a leveller where people are united by a course not tribe.”
