Gov Otu Disengages Home-Grown School Feeding Programme Vendors in Cross River

The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has disengaged Home-Grown School Feeding Programme vendors in the state.

According to a press release signed by Mr Nsa Gill, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor on 3rd May 2024, the dismissed vendors are old vendors from 2016 to 2023.

The Governor thanked the old vendors for their services to the State as well as wished them well in their endeavours.

The press release titled ‘NATIONAL HOME-GROWN SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMME: DISENGAGEMENT OF 2016 TO 2023 VENDORS IN CROSS RIVER STATE,’ reads as follows:

“In line with the vision and the determination of His Excellency the Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu, to reinvigorate the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, the general public is at this moment notified of the formal disengagement of the old Vendors of the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme in Cross River State.

“His Excellency wishes to thank the old vendors for their services to the State and wishes them well in their future endeavours.”

CONVERSEER reports that the Home Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP) is a Federal Government initiative aimed at providing a nutritious meal to public school pupils, improving education outcomes, and supporting local agriculture.

The programme which was initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari and launched in 2016, has several goals including:

  1. Improve enrollment and reduce dropout rates
  2. Enhance pupil health and nutrition
  3. Support local farmers and boost economic growth
  4. Empower communities and create jobs

The programme operates in several states across Nigeria, with a focus on using locally sourced ingredients and engaging local cooks to prepare the meals. This approach helps stimulate local economies and promotes community involvement in education.

Some benefits of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme include:

  • Improved academic performance and attendance
  • Better health and nutrition for pupils
  • Increased economic activity and job creation
  • Enhanced community engagement and ownership
