CONVERSEER reports that the Home Grown School Feeding Programme (HGSFP) is a Federal Government initiative aimed at providing a nutritious meal to public school pupils, improving education outcomes, and supporting local agriculture.

The programme which was initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari and launched in 2016, has several goals including:

  1. Improve enrollment and reduce dropout rates
  2. Enhance pupil health and nutrition
  3. Support local farmers and boost economic growth
  4. Empower communities and create jobs

The programme operates in several states across Nigeria, with a focus on using locally sourced ingredients and engaging local cooks to prepare the meals. This approach helps stimulate local economies and promotes community involvement in education.

Some benefits of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme include:

  • Improved academic performance and attendance
  • Better health and nutrition for pupils
  • Increased economic activity and job creation
  • Enhanced community engagement and ownership

Overall, the HGSFP aims to create a sustainable and inclusive education system that supports the well-being and development of Nigerian children.
