The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has extended heartfelt congratulations to William Troost-Ekong on his retirement from international football.
The Governor in a statement issued by the Commissioner of Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, described the Super Eagles captain’s career as illustrious, exemplary, and defined by unwavering dedication, discipline, and leadership both on and off the pitch.
Until his retirement announcement, Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria’s senior men’s national team—the Super Eagles—earning more than 80 caps.
He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he also set a tournament record as the highest-scoring defender with three goals, leading Nigeria to a runners-up finish.
Speaking through the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, Governor Eno commended Troost-Ekong for his distinguished service to the nation, his exceptional achievements, and his role as a source of pride and inspiration to millions of football lovers around the world.
He said, “on behalf of my family and the people of our dear state, I sincerely congratulate our son, William Troost-Ekong, who has been a worthy ambassador of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria, both as a player and as captain of the national team.
“As a state, we join your numerous fans around the world to celebrate your remarkable achievements. We acknowledge your outstanding contributions to Nigerian football and the global recognition you have brought to Akwa Ibom and the nation. Your commitment to excellence and exemplary sportsmanship remain a shining model for younger generations.
“As you call time on your illustrious international career with the Super Eagles, I wish you a new chapter filled with continued success and meaningful opportunities. Thank you for representing Nigeria with honour, courage, and distinction. We are proud of your milestones. Thank you for being a proud Ambassador of Akwa Ibom. Congratulations.”
Governor Eno also wished the defender continued success at his current club, Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League, and in all future endeavours.
Troost-Ekong began his football journey at youth level in England with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, before turning professional in the Netherlands with FC Groningen and FC Dordrecht.
In 2015, he signed for Belgian club KAA Gent, immediately going on loan to Norwegian side FK Haugesund.
His career later took him to Bursaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig, Udinese in the Italian Serie A, Watford in the English Championship, and a return to Italy with Salernitana.
He also featured for Greek club PAOK before joining his current club, Al-Kholood, where he moved on 23 August.
