Governor Bassey Otu has appointed His Royal Majesty Ovai (Elder) Solomon Osim Edward JP as the new Chairman of the Cross River State Traditional Rulers’ Council (Council of Chiefs).

HRM Ovai Edward’s appointment was contained in a press statement signed by Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) on Friday, 21st June 2024.

CONVERSEER reports that Edward is the Paramount Ruler of Abi Local Government Area, and he replaced HRM (Dr) Etim Okon Edet, who was removed by the Cross River State House of Assembly for overstaying his tenure.

The statement by the SSG said the appointment of Edward is for a period of 2 years.

It also added that the appointment was in line with Section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law, Cap C15 Laws of Cross River State 2004.

“His Excellency, the Governor, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, in the exercise of the power vested in him by Section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law, Cap C15 Laws of Cross River State 2004, has approved the appointment of His Royal Majesty Ovai (Elder) Solomon Osim Edward JP, Paramount Ruler of Abi Local Government Area, as Chairman, State Council of Chiefs.

“The appointment of His Royal Majesty Ovai Osim Edward is for a term of 2 years effective from 21st June 2024,” the statement read.

Recall that the Governor on 14th June dissolved the Cross River State Council of Chiefs (Traditional Rulers’ Council).
