The Deputy Governor of Cross River State, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, has affirmed that Governor Bassey Otu’s administration remains committed to boosting the economy and conserving the environment through the development of ecotourism.

Odey made this known during a courtesy call by organizers of the Agbokim Falls Marathon at his office in Government House, Calabar on Tuesday. He emphasized that sport ecotourism is a vital tool for driving inclusive development and promoting environmental sustainability.

In a press release from his Press Unit on Wednesday, the Deputy Governor noted that agriculture, tourism, and sports development are critical components of the administration’s People First mantra.

Highlighting the state’s rich cultural heritage and natural attractions, including Agbokim Waterfalls, Obudu Ranch Resort, Afi Wildlife Sanctuary, and Drill Ranch, Odey stressed that Cross River has the potential to grow its economy while preserving biodiversity, positioning the state not only as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria but across Africa.

Commending the organizers and other partners dedicated to the Cross River cause, Odey reiterated the administration’s commitment to the development of the sector and assured them of government support.

Speaking earlier, the Chief Executive Officer of Creative Associates, Mr. Emem Udominyang, commended the Cross River State Government for investing in sports development across the local government areas and for partnering with Creative Associates on the second edition of the Agbokim Green Falls Marathon.

With the theme, “From Conference Rooms and Highways to Forest Communities and Sanctuaries,” Udominyang said this year’s event will go beyond conferences to incorporate local content. He explained that a special segment has been reserved for local athletes to encourage grassroots participation and promote sports development.

In his contribution, Mr. Clement Umina, former Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, explained that the 42km race will feature three tracks, starting from Ikom through Ajassor to Agbokim. He emphasized that the 2025 edition will focus on biodiversity conservation, adding, “Each kilometer we run brings us closer to saving our planet and humanity.”

He further noted that other side attractions will include exhibitions, symposiums, tours of cultural sites, and a gala night featuring awards and prize presentations.

Others in attendance included the Secretary to the Government of the State, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, and Mr. Sylva Bogbo of Creative Associates.
