Governorship candidate joins SDP in Cross River

By Frank Ulom

CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – The 2023 governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement (NRM) in Cross River State, Patrick Solomon, has officially defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing the move as a principle step towards advancing inclusive governance, accountability, and people-centred development.

Announcing his defection at the SDP Secretariat along IBB Way, Calabar, in the presence of party leaders, supporters, on Tuesday, Solomon described the decision as a defining moment in his political journey, informed by extensive consultation, reflection, and engagement with the aspirations of Cross Riverians.

“Cross Riverians deserve a political platform that genuinely reflects our shared values of social justice, inclusive governance, and sustainable development,” Solomon said, adding that his choice of the SDP aligns with his long-standing commitment to equity and public accountability.

The political juggernaut noted that the SDP’s social democratic ideology provides a framework for addressing the state’s socio-economic challenges through transparent governance, equitable opportunities, and responsive leadership.

According to him, strengthening institutions, prioritising human capital development, and deepening citizen participation are essential to building long-term prosperity in Cross River State.

Reflecting on governance experiences in the state, Solomon stressed the importance of policy implementation that balances standards with social impact. Using the education sector as an example, he advocated for reforms that combine regulatory oversight with transitional support for affected schools and families, ensuring that quality assurance measures do not inadvertently disrupt learning outcomes.

He also highlighted the need for stronger systems in local government administration, particularly in recruitment and human resource management. Solomon called for transparent, merit-based processes backed by institutional safeguards to restore public confidence and improve service delivery at the grassroots level.

On federal engagement, Solomon underscored the importance of strategic positioning and effective representation to advance Cross River State’s interests nationally. He emphasised that constructive collaboration, competence, and policy clarity are key to strengthening the state’s voice within the federal structure.

Addressing issues of public trust, Solomon advocated for improved communication between government, civil society, and citizens, noting that sustained dialogue and openness are critical for responsive governance and social cohesion.

Reaffirming his motivation, Solomon stated that his decision to join the SDP was driven by conviction rather than personal ambition. “This is an affirmation of my values and my belief in politics as a tool for positive change,” he said.

He called on youths, women, professionals, and working families to remain actively engaged in the political process, stressing that meaningful development requires collective participation and shared responsibility.

Welcoming him back to the party, the State Chairman of the SDP, Apostle Stella Archibong, expressed confidence that his return would strengthen the party’s reform agenda in Cross River State.

“This is a testament to the growing confidence in the SDP as a platform for purposeful leadership. Together, we are committed to moving the party and the state forward,” she said.

The party’s Vice Chairman (Central), Dr Ekwom Silas represented the State Chairman, encouraged Solomon to fully integrate into the party’s vision, noting that political success is driven by ideas, organisation, and commitment as much as resources.

Party members from the three senatorial districts described the defection as timely, expressing optimism that it would contribute to building a stronger alternative political platform focused on governance reforms and sustainable development in Cross River State.

Solomon was represented at the event by Ambassador Kennedy Nsan.
