Israel launched air strikes on military targets in western and central Iran early on Monday, hours after Iran fired ballistic missiles at northern Israel in the first such direct attack since a fragile ceasefire came into effect in early April.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said its aircraft struck military sites, including areas near Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan.
Explosions were reported in those cities. Israel also struck an IRGC-linked petrochemical facility in Mahshahr, marking the first reported attack on an Iranian energy-related site since the ceasefire.
Iran’s missile barrage on Sunday targeted northern Israel in response to recent Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
The IDF said it intercepted the incoming projectiles, with no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage in Israel.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described the missile attack as the beginning of a potential week of continuous strikes and warned of further action if Israeli operations in Lebanon continued.
U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to exercise restraint and avoid retaliatory action in order to preserve de-escalation efforts, but Israel proceeded with the strikes.
The exchanges mark the latest breach of the fragile ceasefire arrangements that followed the wider U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which began in late February 2026.
Efforts to mediate and stabilise the region and bring an end to the conflict have been complicated by repeated incidents involving Iran, Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
No immediate casualty figures were available from the Iranian side.
Both countries have issued warnings of further escalation as the situation continues to develop.
