James Carville Has Totally Different Take On Colbert’s Cancellation Compared To Other Democrats

WASHINGTON, D.C. (DCNF, CONVERSEER) – James Carville appeared on Fox News Thursday to weigh in with a strikingly different view of Stephen Colbert’s recent cancellation, setting him apart from most Democrats.

CBS announced that it will cancel Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” after the upcoming season, citing financial pressures and marking the end of a longstanding late-night tradition on the network. During an appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Carville responded to host Jesse Watters’ question about the ongoing media focus on Colbert’s departure. He said it could simply be a product of shifting economics rather than anything more politically motivated.

“And I don’t know if it was driven by anything. It might have been a purely economic decision. I don’t know that, to tell you the truth, Jesse. I know that you guys make a lot of money,” Carville said.

Carville suggested it had less to do with politics and more to do with shifting viewer habits.

“I don’t know the economics of it. I know some people, some friends that have something to do with late-night TV, and people just don’t watch it like they used to,” Carville said. “And, you know, the media landscape changes. You know, when I grew up, everybody watched the news at 5:30 Central. And, you know, who every news anchor was, it all changes.”

Democrats, including Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy, have said that Colbert’s cancellation was politically motivated, pointing to his comments about a settlement with President Donald Trump over an $8.4 billion merger. Murphy said the timing of the cancellation serves as evidence that America is becoming a “censorship state” under the Trump administration.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries compared Colbert to a political martyr who refused to bow to a “wannabe king.” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders also questioned the timing of Colbert’s cancellation, calling him “an extraordinary talent.”

Paramount said that Colbert’s cancellation was financially motivated, citing a 40% drop in ad revenue since 2018. Colbert’s ratings peaked at 3.1 million viewers in the 2017-2018 season but had fallen to 1.9 million by the end of the latest season in May.
