Kano State has emerged as the leading state in Nigeria for newly registered voters, recording 441,845 registrations under the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise as of June 15, 2026.
The figures were contained in a report presented by the Sub-Committee on ICT and Data Collection, chaired by the Kano State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu.
According to the report released on Thursday, Kano ranked first among the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, reflecting growing political awareness and civic participation among residents.
The report attributed the achievement to sustained voter mobilisation efforts and public awareness campaigns initiated by the Kano State Government under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. It noted that the state established a Voter Registration Task Force Committee in 2025 to encourage eligible residents, particularly youths, to register and participate actively in the democratic process.
A breakdown of registrations across Kano’s 44 local government areas showed significant variations. Bichi Local Government Area recorded the highest number of new registrations with 30,806 voters, followed by Kumbotso with 18,701, Nasarawa with 18,184, Dawaki Tofa with 17,748, Bagwai with 15,808, and Ungogo with 15,584.
At the lower end of the chart, Kunchi recorded 5,030 registrations, while Warawa registered 5,462, Tsanyawa 5,597, Garun Malam 5,679, and Bunkure 5,699.
The report observed that voter registration was particularly strong in urban and semi-urban areas, especially within the Kano metropolitan axis, while some rural local government areas recorded comparatively lower turnout.
It also highlighted the role of young people in driving the registration surge, describing youth participation as a major factor behind the state’s impressive performance.
Bichi Local Government Area received special recognition for its outstanding contribution, accounting for about seven per cent of the state’s total registrations. The report credited the feat to effective voter mobilisation initiatives implemented in the area.
To sustain the momentum, the committee recommended intensified voter education and awareness campaigns in local government areas with lower registration figures. It also urged local authorities to engage more youths and community volunteers in mobilisation efforts while strengthening collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission to facilitate the completion of biometric registration processes.
The report concluded that the registration of more than 441,000 new voters demonstrates the commitment of Kano residents to democratic participation and provides a strong foundation for electoral planning, demographic analysis, and evidence-based governance ahead of future elections.
