Kingship: Onyeme Charges Delta Communities on Due Process

By Dianabasi Effiong

Delta communities, desirous of having their King, have been told to avoid actions that could breed crises and lawlessness in their respective domains.

The Deputy Governor of the State, Sir Monday Onyeme, made the call on Tuesday in Asaba when he met with some political leaders and traditional rulers from Ukwuani Local Government Area.

He also urged them to follow due process to actualise the desire to have their King.

According to him, there are laid down rules on how kings emerge in kingdoms.

He said, “It is important that we follow that due process, because, as a government, we will always present the Staff of Office to kings who are qualified for such.”

Onyeme, who also mediated on the issue of sales of land in Obiaruku, the headquarters of Ukwuani Local Government Area, called on those who were selling land in areas of dispute to desist from doing so.

“Refrain from selling land in disputed areas, since the case is before a competent court of law, wait for the judgement of the court before embarking on any action, or you fall victim to contempt of court.

“The administration of Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori will not tolerate a crisis of any kind in any part of our state. We are committed to peaceful co-existence, adherence to the rule of law, and ensuring a state where socio-economic activities thrive without fear of anybody being molested.

“This is a modern age, due to development, some communities have become autonomous but such should be done civilly without rancour, it can be done by mutual agreement,” he said.

Some of those who spoke at the meeting included the Chairman, Ukwuani Local Government Council, Hon. Possible Ajede, the Commissioner for Finance, Sir Fidelis Tilije, former Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ochor Christopher Ochor, former member of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Alphonsus Ojo, the Ebu of Umuebu Kingdom, HRM Donald Ekeruche.

Others are: the Ezhie of Ezionum Kingdom, HRM Roland Osawunta, the Igwete of Amai Kingdom, HRM Paul Solomon Ifeneziuche, among others.

All of them said that there was no alternative to peaceful co-existence.

They also assured the Deputy Governor that the leaders of Ukwuani Local Government Council were civilised enough to embrace peace at all times.
