Lagos urges residents to file annual tax returns before March deadline

With the clock ticking toward the March 31, 2025 deadline, the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) is calling on individual taxpayers to fulfill their civic duty by submitting their annual tax returns. This is a legal requirement many still overlook.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the LIRS Head of Corporate Communications, Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude, the agency reminded Lagosians that this directive aligns with the Personal Income Tax Act (PITA) 2004, as amended.

According to the law, everyone earning an income, whether self-employed, working in the informal sector, or salaried under the Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE) scheme, must file their returns on or before March 31, 2025.

The statement quoted the LIRS Executive Chairman, Ayodele Subair, who explained the importance of compliance, pointing to Section 41 of the Act. It mandates that all taxable persons provide a comprehensive statement of their total income from all sources for the previous fiscal year (January 1 to December 31, 2024) to the state tax authority within 90 days of the new assessment year.

“Timely filing of tax returns is not just a legal obligation — it’s a civic responsibility,” Subair said. “We urge all taxpayers to meet this deadline to avoid penalties and other legal consequences.”

To make the process as seamless as possible, the LIRS has streamlined tax filing through its dedicated eTax portal. This is an online platform designed for ease, security, and efficiency.

“The eTax portal offers taxpayers convenience and a simplified compliance process,” Subair noted. “For those who may need help navigating the platform, we’ve stationed dedicated tax officers across our tax offices to assist with registration and online submissions.”
