Liberia has launched Operation True Guardian, a military initiative aimed at fortifying its borders, enhancing maritime security, and combating transnational crime.
The operation, which began on March 23, 2025, has deployed Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) personnel to the western counties of Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu for security patrols.
The initiative is designed to curb cross-border smuggling, drug and arms trafficking, and other illicit activities that pose risks to Liberia’s stability and economic growth.
Across West Africa, governments and regional bodies like ECOWAS are working to tighten security measures, particularly in light of recent political instability and extremist threats in the Sahel.
As part of Operation True Guardian, the Liberian military plans to establish Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in critical areas, allowing for a sustained presence in vulnerable regions.
The military will also collaborate with local authorities, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders to enhance intelligence gathering and response mechanisms.
Additionally, the initiative is expected to strengthen Liberia’s maritime security by protecting its coastline from illegal fishing, piracy, and drug trafficking—issues that have become pressing concerns for West African coastal nations.
The Liberian Ministry of National Defense and the Chief of Staff of the AFL have emphasized that the operation will be conducted quarterly, with future phases extending to other regions.
