The Nigel magistrate’s court in South Africa has denied bail to a 49-year-old male nurse from Duduza, who is charged with r@ping a 17-year-old boy and s3xually assaulting a 19-year-old man. The nurse was arrested last month in connection with the r@pe, which allegedly occurred a few years ago.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana stated that in August 2023, the now 17-year-old boy was admitted to a private hospital in Springs, where he met the accused, who was employed as a nurse. During the boy’s stay at the hospital, the accused allegedly made advances towards him. The boy was later discharged from the hospital due to depleted medical aid.
The accused allegedly promised to continue caring for the boy and bring him medication at his home until he fully recovered. However, when it was time for the nurse to leave, he allegedly asked the boy to accompany him in his car and drove him to a nearby field where he s3xually assaulted him. On two occasions, while in the veld in his car, the accused allegedly r@ped the boy.
In court, the accused requested bail, citing the need to work to support his child. He claimed to be in a love relationship with the 17-year-old. Prosecutor Tumelo Madisha opposed the bail application, arguing that the nurse exploited the boy’s vulnerable situation, stemming from his inability to afford ongoing hospital care. Madisha also stated that the accused was a flight risk because he failed to provide an alternative address.
Magistrate Rakesh Chitradow agreed with the state, stating that the accused was a flight risk and that there were no exceptional circumstances warranting his release on bail. The case has been postponed to March 31 for further investigation.
