Mojisola Meranda on Monday officially stepped down as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
At a special plenary held in Alausa, Meranda read her resignation letter aloud, saying, “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.”
Meranda’s time in office began on January 13 after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who, according to reports, may soon be reinstated.
Though Meranda’s tenure was brief, her leadership left a strong impression on the lawmakers.
Other lawmakers praised her ability to lead with grace and foster a collaborative atmosphere within the Assembly.
In a surprising move, Meranda resigned alongside all the principal officers who were appointed with her.
The crisis began on January 13, when Obasa, a lawmaker representing Agege Constituency I, was removed as speaker by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House over alleged misconduct and sundry offenses.
Obasa’s then deputy, Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.
However, on January 25, Obasa rejected his removal and insisted that he remained the speaker until the right thing had been done.
He faulted the militarisation of the Assembly complex during the impeachment process.
He also claimed that his impeachment took place when he was out of the country.
